Train In Vain
I'm not usually one for a ranting thread against the state of the nation, but then again I don't book train tickets very often. It simply defies belief. How much?! I'm trying to book a journey to visit a friend down near Bristol, in over a month's time, for her birthday, and the cheapest ticket is over 50 quid. So I can't afford to go. Simple as that. To put it into some kind of perspective, I popped over to Amtrak, where you can book American train tickets. You can go from New York to Los Angeles for $147. Which at the current exchange rate is roughly 75 quid.
Which, quite frankly, really pisses me off. I could go into a whole rant about not owning a car, being good to the environment, lack of support for people who actually want to use public transport, the scandal of the whole privatisation of the rail service, and so on, but it won't change the fact that I won't be able to go to my friend's birthday.
Actually, check that, I am going to rant. Fuck this. I'm getting up on my high horse now, so watch it. Over to Easyjet. I can fly to Madrid (that's Madrid in Spain) for less. Let's see where else I can go for my 50 quid. Hmmm. Let's try Italy, I fancy visiting Venice again. That was nice. Let's see... outward 3rd March, 30 quid, return 4th March, 17 quid. Ok, there are probably taxes to be added, but the fact remains, I can fly in a PLANE, which is one of the least environmentally friendly things in the whole world, to VENICE for LESS than it costs me to get a TRAIN to FUCKING WESTON FUCKING SUPER FUCKING MARE.
