Don't You Know Who I Think I Am?
Hello. This is Delrico Bandito. It's a blog about a character which is a bit like me, but isn't really me. It's something approximate to me, some of the time. A rose tinted, airbrushed portrayal of what I think I want the world to see. And the more I write, the further I seem to get from who I think I really am. There's a gap. An essential gap, one that keeps me sane.
"When photocopiers first came out, people copied their bums. Now, with computers, we photocopy our very being."In essence, I guess all writing is a form of performance. A filtered, affected version of reality. I think it has to be this way. I'm intensely private, and yet feel the urge to write a public diary. It's not explicitly personal, and this is deliberate. Here I'm at the mercy of current beaus and ex-girlfriends, friends and strangers. But don't feel deceived. In reality, you all know a different version of the original me anyway, a version that is unique to you in every way. And I know a unique version of you. We're all characters, swapping masks for every occasion, without even thinking about it.
Douglas Coupland, Microserfs
"There used to be a me behind the mask, but I had it surgically removed."Sometimes I wonder which version of me I really am. What happens if we forget how to be the person behind the mask?
